Marilyn Horn Hartzell, age 87, passed away Tuesday evening, after a long struggle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Howard and Anna (Staiger) Horn. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Gordon, in 1998, sister Virginia Young, and is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Steve) Haraschak, and son, Gary Hartzell, and grandchildren Chad, Alyssa, Lora, and Krista. In addition, she was blessed with 10 great grandchildren, Sydney, Logan, Chase, Dylan, Natalie, Olivia, Benjamin, Nicholas, Grace, and Katie Ann. She is also survived by a brother, Robert Horn in Bath, Ohio.
Marilyn was a registered nurse, graduating from Akron City Hospital School of Nursing, specializing in Labor and Delivery. Following her husband’s managerial activities with Sears and Roebuck, she lived in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Baltimore, Abington Pa., and finally, Leesburg, Florida. She spent 25 years with her dear friends at the Scottish Highlands Community in Leesburg, Florida, which had provided her with a new lease on life. She was extremely active in the community, serving for many years on the Board of Directors of Scottish Highlands, created and led water aerobics classes, and performed on many, many other committees.
She was a member of Lake Square Presbyterian Church in Leesburg, where she enjoyed singing in the Choir. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, dining out and growing orchids. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the wonderful staff and members of the Grandview Hospital Hospice and the Keystone House Hospice in Wyndmoor, Pa., which provided wonderful comfort for her final hours in their “Room With the Angels” A Memorial service will be planned at Scottish Highlands at a future date, with burial in Bushnell Veterans National Cemetery.
