Obituary

Alan “Al” Sherman Myers, 73, of Oreland, Pennsylvania, formerly of Willow Grove, Erdenheim, and Germantown, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Abington Memorial Hospital.

Alan was the beloved husband of Katharine “Kathy” Diane (Benn) Myers, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. He was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to the late Alan T. Myers and the late Virginia “Ginnie” M. (McCord) Myers.

Alan was a graduate of Springfield Township High School in Erdenheim, Pennsylvania, Class of 1970, and later attended Montgomery County Community College.

He enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the former Bell Telephone Company, now Verizon, where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 2003. He began his career as an installer and repairman before moving into management, where he ultimately became an instructor. He retired from Bell Telephone at the age of 50. Alan continued serving his community as a school bus monitor for the Springfield Township School District for 20 years, retiring in 2025. He also worked part-time alongside his son in the IT department at The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (IAHP) in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, managing the organization’s phone system until the time of his passing.

Alan’s Christian faith was at the center of his life. He was a devoted member of Oreland Evangelical Presbyterian Church for almost 50 years, where he served as an elder, trustee, and clerk of session. He also sang in the church choir and served as Sunday school superintendent. He regularly participated in Bible studies, where he was affectionately known as “Brother Al,” and became a mentor and almost a second father to many of those he encountered.

His love of helping others extended well beyond the church. Alan was a certified American Red Cross First Aid instructor and volunteered as a camp instructor during the week-long summer camp for IAHP. He also served as an assistant softball coach for the Springfield Township Girls’ Softball League. He was honored to receive the Raymundo Veras Medal of Humanity and Science from The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential.

Alan was a devoted family man who embraced life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and joy. He was affectionately known as “Butch” within his family. He loved spending time outdoors and was a self-taught naturalist who enjoyed fishing, canoeing, camping, hiking, nature walks, bird watching, and visiting parks. One of his favorite traditions was spending summer weekends with his family at the Bungalow in Trumbauersville, which he lovingly considered his “second home,” from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

An avid Philadelphia sports fan, Alan passionately followed the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers. He loved classic rock and praise and worship music and especially enjoyed attending rock concerts with his son in the “Cruiser.” He and Kathy shared a special love of the band Chicago.

Alan’s interests were wide-ranging and reflected his adventurous spirit. He enjoyed traveling throughout the East Coast and internationally to Spain, France, and Italy. He loved motorcycles and was an avid motorcyclist in his younger years. He enjoyed chess, Pinochle, ping pong, volleyball, tennis, Caroms, board games, and Uno, especially when playing with his grandchildren and great-grandson, Jayden. He delighted in creating special games to play with Jayden and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, plays, and other activities.

Alan also had a generous and welcoming spirit. He served as a host father to foreign exchange students from Mexico and Spain and helped Spanish-speaking families learn English for business. He loved collecting many things, including stamps, baseball cards, and Beanie Babies.

Those who knew Alan will remember him for his hardworking nature, generosity, kindness, and Christian love. He was always willing to help and was known for his quiet strength, wonderful sense of humor, strong work ethic, and genuine care for others. He was organized, meticulous, detail-oriented, and dependable—often knowing exactly where something could be found and, more importantly, making sure he had extra to share with someone else. He was a mentor, a role model, a leader, and a man who could be counted on to make sure things were done thoughtfully and correctly.

Above all, Alan loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His faith, generosity, humor, love of nature, and commitment to those around him left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, Alan is survived by his three children, Alan “Chip” R. Myers and his wife, Natividad, of Erdenheim, PA; Alison E. Wroten and her husband, Paul, of Douglassville, PA; and Ginette L. Ranieri and her husband, George, of Lansdale, PA; his five grandchildren, Michaela, Alan F., Ana, Kathryn “Katie,” and Joseph “Joey”; his great-grandson, Jayden; and his sister, Ellen M. Koudis and her husband, Aristidis, of Souderton, PA.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Oreland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 1119 Church Road, Oreland, Pennsylvania 19075. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. The service will also be livestreamed.
