Obituary

Arlene D. Alderfer , 94, of Souderton, PA went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Souderton Mennonite Homes.

Born on August 29, 1929 in Towamencin Twp. PA, Arlene was the daughter of the late Isaac K. Alderfer and the late Elizabeth (Detweiler) Alderfer. She attended Kulpsville School (later known as J. Henry Specht) in Towamencin Township.

Arlene was employed as seamstress at the former Hatfield Clothing Factory in Hatfield, PA. Later, she worked as a cashier for the former Ralph's Supermarket (later known as Clemens Supermarket) in Lansdale, PA for more than 40 years.

She was a life member of Perkiomenville Mennonite Church where she served as a former Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and Girls Club leader. Later, she worked as a custodian for the church. In 1951, Arlene served as a caregiver to children and in domestic service at West Liberty Children's Home in Ohio. She was a member and volunteer of the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville. She was also a former volunteer at the Care and Share Shoppes in Souderton.

Arlene and her lifelong friend, Esther Clemmer, spent time volunteering at different locations in the country through the Mennonite church. Together, they had a passion for traveling and enjoyed trips throughout the country as well as trips to Europe. Their spectacular back yard gardens were on the "Garden Tour" and enjoyed by many visitors.

Arlene had an avid interest in flower and vegetable gardening. She dried flowers and sold them for arrangements. She enjoyed collecting antiques and bird watching. Arlene loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. She was known for faithfully sending cards on special occasions.

She is survived by her brother, Richard D. Alderfer & wife, Louise of Harrisonburg, VA; her five nephews, Dale B. Alderfer & wife, Nancy of Souderton, PA, Glenn K. Alderfer & wife, Wendy of Telford, PA, Steven Alderfer & wife, Lois of Faber, VA, Rodney Alderfer & wife, Jen of Harrisonburg, VA, Douglas Alderfer & wife, Kathy of Broadway, VA; her seven nieces, Sandra K. Moyer & husband, Harley of Athol, ID, Cheryl K. Overholt & husband, Dale of Souderton, PA, Jolene K. Weaver & husband, Wendell of Telford, PA, Karen K. Arcaro & husband, Armand of Harleysville, PA, Denise L. Kiser & husband, Jeff of Souderton, PA, Melissa "Missy" S. Wood & husband, Todd of Quakertown, PA, Katrina "Katie" L. Santora & husband, Joe of Perkasie, PA; her 28 great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Esther (Lapp) Alderfer; her three brothers, Robert D. Alderfer, Stanley D. Alderfer, Harold "Ollie" D. Alderfer; and her three sisters-in-law, Dolores J. Alderfer, Mae K. Alderfer, and Carol A. Alderfer.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964 from 10:00 am - 11:00, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am.  Burial will take place at Perkiomenville Mennonite Cemetery.
