Beryl "Sam"
L. Martin
Jan 12, 1950 — May 26, 2024
Beryl "Sam" L. (Gardiner) Martin , 74, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Warwick, RI, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at Grand View Hospital.
Sam was the loving partner and wife of James "Mike" Michael Hazlett for 25 years. She was Mom to Eric, Mikaela and Brooke, and Grandma to Kyle, Ashlee and Avery. Sam was born in Warwick, RI, to the late Howard Gardiner and the late Eva (Anderson) Gardiner.
Sam cared passionately about the community and people around her, both in her professional and personal lives. She had recently retired as office manager from Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County after 20 years; she had previously worked at Souderton Area High School for 20 years. She was a member of the Concert Sundaes committee for 30 years, serving in every capacity, from general member to president, then becoming a member emerita in 2021 until her passing. Sam was a former member of the Perseverance Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was an active volunteer throughout her children's school years, serving as a PTA member and a Big Red Band Booster.
Her most important and treasured role, however, was that of Mom. Sam was a mother not only to her three children, but to so many of their friends, as well as her own friends, coworkers, neighbors, and extended family. Her unconditional and motherly love only continued to expand when she became a grandmother; and, she is fondly known as "Grandma Sam" to innumerable "grandchildren."
In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Sam felt deeply in her spirit a love for nature. She had fond memories of playing in the woods at her grandparents' home growing up, and nothing brought her more peace than watching the ocean waves in Rhode Island. She was an avid reader, enthusiastic fan of music, and always up for a culinary adventure. Sam loved all animals, but especially dogs. She and Mike raised, adored, and spoiled several golden retrievers over the years; and, she leaves behind her precious "baby dog," Tupper.
Sam was known for her intelligence, wit, creativity and imposing research skills. She graduated from Pilgrim High School in Warwick, RI, in 1968 and later attended Montgomery County Community College as an adult.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Hazlett of Souderton, PA, two daughters, Mikaela D. Martin of Souderton, PA, and Brooke E. Martin of Pottstown, PA, her three grandchildren, Kyle Martin & wife, Kayla, of High Springs, FL, Ashlee Holmes of Dade City, FL. and Avery Cain of Telford, PA, and her sister, Doris "Dotti" DeFeo and husband, William "Bill" of Warwick, RI.
In addition to her parents, Sam was preceded in death by her son, Eric J. Martin.
