Charlotte Walker , 96, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Philadelphia, peacefully passed away at home on Saturday, March 23, 2024, with family by her side. She was the loving wife of Robert Walker for 70 years.

She graduated from the School of Nursing at the Syracuse University in 1950 and worked at Chestnut Hill Hospital for forty years.  Patients appreciated her compassionate care and empathy. Co-workers loved working with her as she regaled them with stories of her family and adventures. (Her friends and family knew she would occasionally embellish!)

She was still hosting luncheons in her 80s at home for up to 50 nurses she had worked with over the years.

Her nursing didn't end after her retirement. She became the Florence Nightingale of Kingsfield, removing stitches, dressing wounds and visiting sick neighbors. Her medicine was home-baked cookies, but you didn't have to be sick to find a plate of freshly-baked cookies in your mailbox. If you brought her trash cans up, shoveled her driveway or were police officers escorting her home after she got lost trying to go to the Post Office, cookies were her "thank you."  She volunteered at the local nursing home in her 80s, bringing beloved dog, Jasmine (AKA Jazz) to administer pet therapy. She couldn't have been prouder of  Jazz when she was  named "Therapy Dog of the Month" at Phoebe Richland Nursing Home.

She loved animals and bred her beloved Kerry Blue Terriers, Schnauzers and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers. She once left instructions for daughter Christine on how to deliver the puppies if Corky should go into labor while she was away. She volunteered at Steinbach Veterinary Hospital, even using her nursing skills to assist with surgery. She loved going on farm calls with Dr. Steinbach, even after getting bitten by an angry pig. She continued to work with Dr. Jonathan King when he took over the practice and was forever grateful for his care of  her dogs over the years.

Charlotte was a Girl Scout leader for ten years and loved taking them on hikes in her beloved Wissahickon Valley Park in Philadelphia.

She was an avid knitter. Her specialty was scarves and hats. She kept a tally and at the time of her death was up to 151 scarves; she didn't keep track of the hats. She made them for Post Office employees, the cashiers at Landis (her favorite grocery store), employees at the doctor's office, friend's grandchildren and just about anyone she met.

Left with decades of  colorful stories and fond memories are her son, Peter Walker and his wife Sharon of Coopersburg, PA; daughter Karen Hancock and husband Jay of Ellicott City, MD; , daughter Christine Walker; five grandchildren, Sarah, Holly, Scott, Will and Jimmy; and four great-grandchildren, Darien, Mateo, Nico and Esben. In addition to her husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by sister, Sylvia and brother, Tony and her beloved rescue mutt, Bailey.

She was a lifelong member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization that promotes women's access to higher education.

We are forever in debt to all the neighbors and friends who helped Mom, especially Ruth, Karen, Ron, Lynn, Marisa, Pat, Stella, Nancy and Jerry. Everyone in Kingsfield helped Mom in some way.

Virginia Alice Cottey founded Cottey College in 1884 with the belief that women deserved the same quality education as men. When Virginia Alice became a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, she realized P.E.O. paralleled her own goals and ideas about higher education for women.

In 1927, the P.E.O. Sisterhood accepted Cottey College as a gift from Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard, making Cottey College the only nonsectarian college owned and supported by women.

Charlotte requested no memorial service. Please memorialize her in your hearts.
