Floyd W. Freed , 84, of Pottstown, PA; formerly of Putnam Station, NY finished his earthly race and entered into his Lord's presence on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at his residence.

He was the loving husband of Edith (Beidler) Freed, with whom he would have celebrated 62 years of marriage in March. Floyd was born in Franconia, PA to the late Melvin H. Freed and the late Edith (Willouer) Freed.

He attended Souderton Area High School  and was employed by the Sunlite Shop, Souderton, PA. After his marriage to Edith, he entered voluntary service (1-W) as a medical orderly in Miami, FL where he served from 1961 to 1963.  Upon returning to the Franconia area, he was employed by Longacre Poultry as a truck driver.

In 1966 Floyd and his family moved to Putnam Station, NY to build relationships that eventually resulted in the reopening of a community church, The Log Chapel.  He was pastor of the Log Chapel Fellowship for 25 years, retiring in 1996. He also was self-employed as an all-around handyman serving those around him and the community in whatever capacity he was needed.  He was well known for his ease of interactions with others, gentle spirit, and willingness to help out in whatever was needed, including as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department.

At age 42 Floyd discovered he had a severe heart condition which resulted in open heart surgery, the first of three major cardiac surgeries he would experience in his life.  For Floyd and Edith, this reality of the fragility of life formed for them the foundation of their approach to life:  live life to the fullest, live in service and ministry to others, and trust God for whatever may come.

After retiring as pastor he took a one year sabbatical in Americus, GA where he spent time with family and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Upon returning to Putnam Station, NY, he continued to be actively involved in the Log Chapel Fellowship and serving the community.

Floyd and Edith moved to the Pottstown area in 2005 where he volunteered and later worked for Liberty Ministries in Pottstown. He was a very active member of the Boyertown Mennonite Church, including serving as a church elder.

Floyd enjoyed woodworking, refinishing furniture, repairing anything that wasn't working, and repurposing broken items into something useful.  His creations and recreations are present in the homes of his children and friends. He also enjoyed watching football, reading, and outdoor activities like gardening, ice fishing, hunting, and camping.

He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a hardworking, compassionate, caring man with the "Freed" sense of humor and a servant's heart.  His model of a true servant's heart has shaped within his sons, and those who knew him, their approach to those around them.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary F. Cassel.

Floyd's legacy and impact continues through his wife Edith, his four sons, Dennis Lee Freed & wife Barbara (Burkhart) of Akron, PA, David Roy Freed & wife Cheryl (Clemmer) of Schwenksville, PA, Steven Floyd Freed & wife Marsha (Mack) of Pottstown, PA, and Timothy Earl Freed & wife Rhonda (Landis) of Croghan, NY; his ten grandchildren, Maredith, Abigail, Risa, Omar, Oswaldo, Austin, Jared, Kelsey, Conrad, and Jensen; his five brothers, Henry W. Freed & wife Rachel of Reinholds, PA, Arlin W. Freed & wife Sandy of Elroy, PA, Glenn W. Freed & wife Ella Mae of Pottstown, PA, Laverne W. Freed & wife Lorraine of Mount Pleasant Mills, PA, and Ray W. Freed & wife Beverly of Schwenksville, PA; and his brother-in-law, Paul H. Cassel of Souderton, PA, as well as the many others who have felt his touch on their lives.

All are welcome to a time of family visitation to be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Boyertown Mennonite Church, 275 Mill Street, Boyertown, PA 19512 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A celebration of life and memorial service will follow at 12:00 pm. A light luncheon will be offered after the memorial service.

The family will have a private committal service at Boyertown Mennonite Cemetery.
