Harley K. Smith, 90, of Souderton, formerly of Hilltown, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Souderton Mennonite Homes.

He was the loving husband of Dorothy (Landis) Smith for 69 years. Harley was born in Hilltown, PA to the late Leidy D. Smith and Laura (Kratz) Smith.

He attended Hilltown High School, class of 1947. In his early career, Harley was a dairy & crop farmer. Other jobs included going to market in Philadelphia, mechanic work at Reese's Garage, and selling insurance. Later, Harley started a successful building contracting business with his son and continued crop farming until retirement.

Throughout his career, Harley also served as board member of Dublin Mill, board member of Brotherly Aid Liability Plan, representative for Mennonite Mutual Aid, and president of Franconia Mennonite Mutual Aid Insurance. He also volunteered many hours with Mennonite Disaster Service and participated in many other church service projects.

Devoted to family, Harley loved his work, as well as travel across the US, northern and central Europe, Hawaii and the Caribbean. He especially loved spending winter months in Florida.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth Lee Smith & wife Patricia of Bridgewater, VA, a daughter, Sylvia Miller & husband Virgil of Harrisonburg, VA, five granddaughters, Christina, Cathy, Brenda, Laura, Kara, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Derstine. Among his relatives included an uncle, Clayton Kratz, who died in Russia as a young man serving with Mennonite Central Committee.

Harley was a life member of Blooming Glen Mennonite church, where he served in various capacities, including Sunday school teacher and superintendent, trustee, church council member, usher, and deacon/visitation.

A private burial will take place at Blooming Glen Mennonite Cemetery, immediate family members only. A memorial service will be held at a later date and time.
