Obituary

Heaven has received another angel.  Our beloved, Aunt and Sister, Ascencao S. Goncalves, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2022.  She was small in stature but mighty in personality.

She was born in Portugal on September 26, 1933, in a tiny village in the District of Braga, Portugal.

She worked in the hospital where she had been a patient after suffering severe burns as a girl.  With her caring nature and tenacity, Ascencao flourished and became an integral part of the staff.

Later in life she went to work for a family as their caretaker in Venda do Pinheiro.   We often visited our Aunt at the estate where I can recall chasing after the young chickens, playing with her Irish Setter, Katya, and later her German Shepherd, Paco.  I still remember being terrified of the Knight's Armor in one of the hallways, while at the same time feeling the soothing zephyr through the open windows carrying the hypnotic scent of pine trees and eucalyptus.

She worked for the family until her departure for the United States in 1978.   Where she started working at Longacre Poultry until they were acquired by Pilgrim's Pride where she worked until she retired.

Our aunt loved to spend time with her family especially during the holidays.  She, especially, enjoyed spending time with her Grand Niece, Julia, and Grand Nephew, Ryan.  She had a wicked sense of humor and loved watching Wrestle Mania and Dancing with the Stars.

Our aunt lived in an apartment complex where she enjoyed spending time in the common area and talking with the other residents, especially her best friend Fernanda.

She was a wonderful cook.  Her specialty was Portuguese Cuisine, and her Leite de Crème was legendary.  A common trait among most Portuguese people, is a love of wine.  At family gatherings, she would always ensure that everyone's wine glass was full.

She also enjoyed day trips to Atlantic city with her family and friends to play the slots and, may I add, she was blessed with good luck on many occasions.

You are missed.  We know you are catching up with our family in Heaven, especially pai and Tia Maria.  Don't cause too much trouble! You'll forever be in our hearts.
