Obituary

Merrill B. Landis , 89, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Telford, PA went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Souderton Mennonite Homes.

He was the loving husband of the late Betty (Godshall) Landis for 64 years. Merrill was born in Telford, PA to the late Clinton D. Landis and the late Ellen (Beidler) Landis.

He worked for I.G. Rosenberger Implement Dealer (later known as Detlan Equipment Inc) in Silverdale, as a meat cutter for Godshall Quality Meats in Telford, as a carpenter for the former Jonas Hagey Builders in Souderton, and as a glazier for Alderfer Glass in Telford, PA for 25 years. After retiring, Merrill did part-time lawn mowing for Landis Supermarket and Godshall Quality Meats, both of Telford.

He was ordained on October 21, 1962 at the former Rockhill Mennonite Church in Telford where he served as their lead pastor. From 1968-1982, Merrill served as the associate pastor at Haycock Mennonite Church in Quakertown. For several years, he shared meditations on the radio program 'Life With God'.

Merrill volunteered at the Care and Share Thrift Shoppes in Souderton, Souderton Mennonite Homes, and Mennonite Disaster Service.

Merrill loved spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking and spent countless hours crafting model cars and trucks, trains and bowls, clocks and furniture to give to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing pool, bowling, and wintering in Florida.

Merrill was a hardworking, creative, social, warm, thoughtful man who was quick-witted with a good sense of humor.

He is survived by his two daughters, Shirley Ann Hackman & husband, Joel of Telford, PA, Elaine Landis of Schwenksville, PA; his two sons, Glen M. Landis & wife, Carol of Cumberland, VA, Steven R. Landis & wife, Deborah Dayton of Sellersville, PA; his 12 grandchildren – Ryan, Eric, Jeffrey, Nathan, Luke, Marie, Dawn, Anna, Jesse, Devon, Erin, & Alexander; his 16 great-grandchildren – Gwenyth, Adiah, Asher, Xavier, Ethan, Isaac, Rachel, Heidi, Bethany, Abbie, Malachi, Amelia, Abraham, Samuel, Caleb, & Lydia; and his brother-in-law, Sanford Alderfer of Harleysville, PA.

In addition to his parents and wife, Merrill was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Hackman; his two sisters, Catherine Derstine & Evelyn Alderfer; and his brother-in-law, Lloyd Derstine.

A private viewing and funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Hopewell Christian Fellowship, 601 Hunsicker Road, Telford, Pennsylvania 18969. The viewing and funeral service will be by invitation only. Viewing time will be from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. You are welcome to contact the family if you would like to attend.

Burial will take place at Rockhill Mennonite Cemetery.
