Obituary

Merrill Dennis Overpeck , 91, of Souderton, Pennsylvania, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Souderton Mennonite Homes.

He has the beloved husband of Lizzietta "Liz" (Long) Overpeck, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage.

Born in Telford, Pennsylvania, Merrill was the son of the late Edgar M. Overpeck and the late Elda (Holsinger) Overpeck.

Merrill was a 1953 graduate of Souderton Area High School. He began his career as a milk deliveryman for the former West View Dairies in Souderton before later working for Martin Century Farms. He eventually became a sales clerk for Clemens Supermarkets, serving customers at several locations, including Lansdale, Hatfield, Perkasie, Souderton, and Chalfont. Throughout his life, Merrill was known as a dedicated, dependable, and hardworking employee.

He was a faithful member of Grace Bible Church. He was also an active member of The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania, Inc. and North Penn Goodwill Service, Inc. of Souderton.

Merrill had a deep appreciation for God's creation and the simple joys of life. An accomplished artist, he especially enjoyed painting Pennsylvania's covered bridges and spent many years traveling throughout the state with his wife to visit and photograph them. They also traveled together to other states to photograph covered bridges. He loved flower gardening, taking cross-country trips with his wife, and opening his home each year to host hymn sings in their backyard, where family and friends gathered in fellowship and song.

One of Merrill's most memorable creative projects was constructing a life-sized papier-mâché cow in his basement for Franconia Township's 200th Anniversary Parade. He also had a special gift for making others feel loved, especially babies, whom he delighted in holding and caring for whenever he had the opportunity.

Above all, Merrill treasured time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, and loyal friend. He will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and warm sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, Lizzietta, he is survived by his son, Dennis Keith Overpeck of Telford, PA; his brother, Ray H. Overpeck and his wife, Roberta, of Souderton, PA; and his sister, Ruth Ditty and her husband, Charles, of Harleysville, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Overpeck and Leon Overpeck, and his sisters, Florence Detweiler and Mary Bauman.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. The service will be Livestreamed.
