Rhoda (Alderfer) Benner , 84, of Souderton, Pennsylvania, formerly of Ambler and Harleysville, PA, passed away peacefully with her family by her bedside on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Souderton Mennonite Homes, when she entered the place prepared for her in God's House.
Rhoda was the devoted and loving wife of Gerald A. Benner, with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. Born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Isaiah L. Alderfer and Lovina (Clemens) Alderfer.
She was a 1959 graduate of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School and attended the Grand View Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1962. Rhoda dedicated her professional life to caring for others, serving as a Registered Nurse at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and later with Adult Community Total Services in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, where she worked for 33 years.
Rhoda was a faithful and active member of Ambler Mennonite Church. Throughout the years, she served in many roles, including elder, Sunday School teacher, Summer Bible School teacher, worship leader, ministry team member, and caregiver. She also served as a board member of Dock Woods Retirement Community and was a proud alumna of the Grand View School of Nursing.
She found joy in sewing, reading, cross-stitch, cooking, and baking. Rhoda especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed word games, traveling, and being deeply involved in church life. Known for her kindness and compassion, she was a caring and loving woman who touched many lives.
Rhoda is survived by her husband, Gerald; two daughters, Rosita Derstine & husband, Tim of Lemont, PA, and Joanne Benner of State College, PA; two sons, Kendall Benner & wife, Clara of Souderton, PA, and Darin Benner & wife, Maribeth of Telford, PA; six grandchildren, Kayla, Erika, Luke, Carly, Laura, and Renae; one great-grandson, James; two sisters, Lois C. Zook & husband, Mervin of Millersville, PA, and Rachel Hartzler & husband, Bruce of Galion, OH; and one brother, David L. Alderfer & wife, Maryann of Broomall, PA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaiah and Lovina Alderfer, and her brother, Ralph C. Alderfer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964, followed by an informal visitation at 3:00 p.m. The service will be Livestreamed.
A private inurnment will take place at the Souderton Mennonite Church Memorial Garden.
