Obituary

Robert "Bob" William Kernen , 70, of Hatfield, PA; formerly of Perkasie, PA entered into rest on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at his residence.

He was the loving husband of Karen Grace (Heacock) Kernen for 15 years. Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late William Robert Kernen and the late Winifred (Hutchinson) Kernen.

A 1969 graduate of Central Bucks High School, Bob subsequently went on to earn his bachelor's degree in accounting from Penn State University, class of 1981. Upon graduating university, Bob made the jump into self-employment and never looked back. For over 40 years, he operated as a sole practitioner where he serviced individual and small-business accounting clients. An ardent champion of 'the little guy' (and a true stubborn Irishman), his family used to joke that Bob was the only person in the U.S. who actually looked forward to a chance to tussle with the I.R.S. In addition to accounting, he was also a mortgage broker for over 20 years.

Socially, Bob loved spending time with his family, friends, and his beloved animals… German Shepherds Max, Lance, & Cooper and cats Heathcliff, Bandit, and Whiskers. Among his interests was a life-long love of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though he lamented he would never get a chance to see them win their 7 th Super Bowl ring, he went to his grave satisfied having gotten to see the Steelers beat Tom Brady and the Patriots in-person in 2019, a memory he often recalled fondly. Additionally, he was interested in WWII aviation history, and in particular the B-17 Bomber, a plane his father serviced during WWII. Bob also liked listening to cheesy 80's music, reading poetry, eating ice cream in bed against his doctor's orders, and watching the major tennis championships, a sport that in his younger years, he loved playing. Lastly, Bob was an avid lover of coffee, a vice he passed onto his youngest son, Ash, who, like his father, is known for leaving coffee stains around the house.

Certainly, the image of Bob cruising by in his beloved '87 Chevy Camaro Iroc-Z, T-tops off, perm and Tom Selleck-like mustache looking fresh, all while Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams (Come True)" pour out the speakers is a lasting memory for many of his loved ones.  But perhaps Bob's most endearing and enduring legacy will simply be his utter selflessness. Bob was always willing to help others and often did so at the drop of a dime without hesitation or expectation. A hardworking, charming, affable, social, and good-spirited man, he will be remembered as a lifelong learner, for his intellect, and for his wry sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Westley Robert Kernen of Hatfield, PA, Ashley Robert Kernen & wife, Jessica of Philadelphia, PA; his step-son, Steven Richard Buck of Hatfield, PA; his grandson, Luca Ash Kernen of Philadelphia, PA; his three siblings, William Kernen & companion, Carol Tomaski of Gap, PA, Catherine Pickering of Enola, PA, and Jenny Kernen of Claymont, DE; and brother-in-law, Fred Safstrom of Wichita, KS.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Safstrom of Wichita, KS.
