Ruth Pauline Lewis passed away peacefully in the afternoon of Tuesday, April 11, 2023. She will be with her husband of 71 years, Donald J. Lewis, who passed in October, 2021. They have now, both, joined their Savior in eternal life.

A loving mother to sons, Walter Lewis (Maureen) and Raymond Lewis (Carol Knight) and daughters Paula Morris (Wayne) and Diane Lewis (Will Jacobs), Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Gottlieb and Pauline (Pfaehler) Haegele and two brothers, William and Walter.  Additional family members who will miss her presence, include grandchildren, Elyse Morris, Hannah Lewis (Jacob Barish), Emma Jacobs, and Bryce Jacobs.

Born October 7, 1928, Ruth grew up in a hardworking and loving German American family.  A native of Philadelphia, she epitomized many of the traits that William Penn's, City of Brotherly Love, was founded upon.  Starting at an early age, Ruth worked long hours in her family's German Bakery.  She always cared deeply about the feelings of others and couldn't do enough, throughout her entire life, for family and friends. Raised in the Lutheran Church, she embodied the core Christian principles of peace and goodwill to all. A piece of jewelry she often wore was a large peace symbol crafted from a piece of the recovered wreckage from her husband's B-17 bomber that was shot down during WWII.

A graduate of Lowell Elementary and Olney High, Ruth, for many years, stayed in contact with classmates and coordinated reunions for both schools. She was an avid fan of all the city's culture, cuisine, and sports teams. Ruth would often join family in cheering on the Phillies, Flyers and Eagles with a soft pretzel in hand!

Using her multiple artistic talents, Ruth skillfully decorated many of the cakes at her family bakery. Later, when raising her own family, she started her own, in-house business. Many beautifully hand-painted, ceramics, oil paintings and special occasion Toleware metal trays emerged from her basement kiln and workspace. A lover of bright colors, she often dressed in bright pink and turquoise.

Ruth's baking talents were legendary and on full display during the Christmas season.  Friends, neighbors and family eagerly awaited her tins filled with cookies, almost too beautiful to eat!  She was in her Zen place when reading, gardening, flower arranging, or simply admiring the blooms and the wildlife that enjoyed visiting the Lewis, botanical garden.

A longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Abington, PA, she served as an usher, an altar server and was part of The Ruth Circle. She looked forward to Sunday service and made many life-long, close friendships at her church.

In retirement, Ruth and Don traveled the world together and enjoyed winters in Florida and summers in Maine. But, many of their trips were to celebrate life's milestones with family.  Ruth was never going to miss a family birthday or graduation. She may have kept the U.S. Postal Service afloat with all the special occasion cards and letters she sent to family and friends worldwide!

Mom, Ruth, Ruthie and Nanny, was caring, thoughtful, sensitive and extremely generous.  Throughout her 94 years, she touched so many people, in so many ways. Her warm heart will be missed.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2086 Parkview Avenue, Abington, PA 19001 from 8:30-9:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 9:30 AM.

Burial will take place at Whitemarsh Memorial Park with a "Remembrance" luncheon to follow.
