Obituary

Shirley (Knipe) Ott , 95, of Lansdale, PA; formerly of Hatfield, PA entered into rest on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at St. Mary Center For Rehabilitation & Healthcare.

Shirley was the loving wife of the late Roy Ott for 28 years. She was born in Norristown, PA to the late Chester S. Knipe and the late Kathryn S. (Kratz) Knipe. Shirley grew up in the Knipe's Hotel which was located directly across from the old Hatfield Train Station. Her father previously served as mayor of Hatfield and her grandfather purchased the hotel in 1889. The Knipe family name is deeply woven into the history of Hatfield.

Shirley graduated from Hatfield High School, class of 1946. She then graduated from West Chester State College, class of 1950 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.

Shirley was employed as a teacher for the North Penn School District in Lansdale, PA where she taught health, physical education, and social studies for more than 35 years. She was also the girl's field hockey, basketball, and softball coach.

Shirley was a lifetime member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ in Hatfield, PA.

She was a member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association, the Hatfield Museum and History Society, and the North Penn Alumni Athletic Association.

She loved spending time at the beach and riding her bike in Ocean City, NJ. She also loved visiting Cape May, NJ. Shirley enjoyed traveling and taking trips both nationally and internationally. She was a dedicated Phillies fan and enjoyed watching them play. Shirley was an avid reader of the newspaper and books. She loved her cats and going out to lunch and dinner with her friends. Shirley enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and going to Disney World in Florida.

She was a hardworking and generous woman who was a good friend.

Shirley is survived by her son, David R. Ott & wife, Mary of Hatfield, PA and her grandson, Jeremy D. Ott & wife, Ashlee of Willow Grove, PA. She is also survived by her extended family – Brittany, Jordan, & Sarah, all of Hatfield, PA.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherry Ott and her brother, Chester K. Knipe.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 E. Broad St., Souderton, PA 18964 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am.

Burial will take place at Hatfield Cemetery.
