Shirley June Roth Swartz , surrounded by her loving family, passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Friday, January 7th, 2022.

Shirley was born July 1, 1930 on Elroy Road, Hatfield, PA to Henry & Bertha Roth.

As a family, they attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Souderton. Shirley's father died when she was 3 and she and her mother moved to Front Street, Souderton. When Shirley was 8 years old, they started attending Blooming Glen Mennonite Church. Shirley was baptized there at age 13. Her mother remarried when Shirley was 12 and they began attending Souderton Mennonite Church.

As a child she loved paper cutouts and reading. At age 12 she started working with her stepfather, Henry G. Freed, at the 5th & Olney Market in Philadelphia. She had to drop out of high school to go work at the market but ended up getting her GED many years later. She also took a correspondence course through LaSalle University and got a degree in Interior Decorating. She got A's in this course as decorating was one of her passions.

At one point in her teen years, Shirley was a Nanny for Laura Long, a teacher in the Hilltown area. Laura taught her how to drive and also took her for the driving test, which she passed the first time.

Shirley married Charles L. Swartz in May 1949, nine months after meeting. They lived on Township Line Road, then moved to Green Street, Souderton in 1953, and then to Cherry Lane, Souderton in 1963. They lived there until September of 2017 when they moved to an apartment at the Souderton Mennonite Homes. After marriage they attended Souderton Mennonite Church until they were invited to help with the mission work of Spring Mount Mennonite Church in Schwenksville, PA where they stayed from 1958-1979, and then returned to Souderton Mennonite.

They celebrated 72 years of marriage in 2021. Shirley had a full life. She and Charles did lots of camping with their children and had yearly times at Laurelville Reteat Center, Mount Pleasant, PA, for Family Week as well as lots of other traveling adventures. As a couple they traveled to Canada, Florida Keys, Holy Lands with Harold Fly in 1985 and Austria & Switzerland in 1989 and lots of other trips with Shirley's sister and her husband.

Shirley worked at American Olean Tile from 1948-1951, worked as a cashier at Daub's Market in Souderton, sold World Book Encyclopedias (which is how she earned a set for her 4 kids), did some housecleaning, was on staff for 24 years at Care & Share Thrift Stores as Manager, then Assistant Manager, and then volunteered there for 18 years.

While attending Souderton Mennonite, she served on the visitation team for 15 years visiting members, and then did scheduling and visiting for 11 years. She also occasionally taught Sunday School.

Her hobbies were sewing (She made doll clothes, school dresses and bridesmaids dresses for her daughter.), gardening, reading, traveling, Words With Friends on her iPad, decorating, reading decorating magazines and most of all, spending time with her family. She basically lived a contented and positive life with whatever came her way. She taught her children well and created a home where you always felt secure, accepted and loved.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Charles and 3 children: C. Stephen Swartz (Mary), Sharon "Shari" Nice (Paul) and Craig Swartz (Jayn). Seven Grandchildren: Shannon Childs (Scott), Corey Nice (Angela), Amy Kim (Sung), Bekah Goodland (Daniel), Cody Swartz, Bryn Swartz, Danae Swartz and 10 Great Grandchildren: Caden, Paige & Maddux Childs; Dillon, Tyler & Ian Nice; Elsa & Micah Kim; Elijah & Elinore Goodland. She was preceded in death by her parents Henry & Bertha Roth, stepfather Henry Freed, one sister at age 13 months and one at 5 years, a grandson Derek Swartz, a son Kevin, a sister Alverda Moyer.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 10:00am – 11:00am where friends may meet with the family at Anders Funeral Home,130 East Broad Street, Souderton, PA 18964, followed by a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11:00am.

A private inurnment will take place at the convenience of the family.
