Stanley "Stan" L. Freed, 87, of Harleysville, PA; went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at Abington-Lansdale Hospital of Jefferson Health.

He was the loving husband of the late Grace W. (Landes) Freed for 64 years. Stan was born in Franconia Twp., Pennsylvania to the late John H. Freed and the late Lizzie M. (Landis) Freed.

He attended Franconia Elementary School to 8th Grade and later received his GED.

Prior to his marriage Stan worked for his father on the family farm and then as a commission merchant in Philadelphia for 10 years. For over 40 years Stan worked as a vending machine technician for the former Rosenberger's Dairy in Hatfield. For many years he was a columnist for the former Souderton Independent newspaper with his article "Coffee Break Meditation." He free-lanced wrote for various magazines, such as Gospel Herald. He was also self- employed, selling books and hymnals on line.

Stan was a member of the Mennonite Historical Society in Harleysville, PA, a member of the St. Davids Writers Conference in St. Davids, PA, and served on various committees with the former Franconia Conference Western District of the Mennonite Church.

Stan was an active member of the former First Mennonite Church of Norristown and current member of Nueva Vida Norristown New Life where he served as a church elder, Sunday school teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, VBS teacher, librarian, and church council member. He was a current attender at Towamencin Mennonite Church.

Stan was a writer and would always have pens in his shirt pocket ready for inspiration. His autobiography "Leaves From My Family Tree…Finding My Way" was published in 1996. A second book's chapters were written, but never published. Stan taught courses at Keystone Bible Institute in Lansdale. He also volunteered at the Mennonite Resource Center in Harleysville where he cut kit bags. For some years he was involved with prison ministry, corresponding by letter with inmates sharing the gospel and words of encouragement. He had a giving spirit and donated to many charities with a special heart for those that sought "peace and justice."

Stan was an avid reader of his Bible, books, the daily newspaper and magazines. He enjoyed poetry and would many times recite rhymes and silly sayings he would remember from his childhood, some even in Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. He cared for his "mini orchard" of fruit trees, enjoyed nature, especially birds and trees (his favorite was the "Catalpa – bean tree"). He enjoyed games such as Scrabble, Racko, Sudoku, Word Searches and was part of a bocce ball team for several years. Stan loved music, often whistling, humming ,singing hymns as well as silly songs from his past, tapping his foot, clapping and recently tapping on his drum. He also sang in the choir at Walnut Meadows. His family was important to him and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and relatives.

He was a humble, gentle, peace and justice loving, positive thinking, reflective, generous man. His heart would go out to the poor, downtrodden, and oppressed. He cherished friendships with persons of all nationalities, races and cultures. He exemplified non-judgmental and looking for the good in all. Over all, Stan loved his Lord and served him with his whole life.

Stan is survived by his four children: Stephen L. Freed & wife, Robin of Lansdale, PA; Grace E. Halama & husband, Robert of Camden Wyoming, DE, Deborah J. Salvo of Collegeville, PA, Rhoda M. Detwiler & husband, Alan of Harleysville, PA; his six grandchildren – Chris, Justin, Kristy, Jesse, Sherry, & Jennifer; his four step-grandchildren – Kim, Alan, Jr., Tom, & Laurel; his seven step-great-grandchildren; his eight step-great-great-grandchildren; his seven siblings, Richard L. Freed of Bethlehem, PA, Leroy L. Freed & wife, Amanda of Barnett, MO, Elizabeth L. Allred & husband, Reginald of Durham, NC, Dr. Clarence L. Freed & companion, Eddie Martinez of Allentown, PA, Esther L. Hagg of East Greenville, PA, Marcus L. Freed of London, OH and Miriam L. Hunsberger & husband, Glenn of Earlington, PA.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ralph L. Freed & John L. Freed; his two sisters, Ruth L. Bergman & Naomi L. Freed; and his son-in-law, Tony Salvo.

A memorial service will be held at Towamencin Mennonite Church, 1980 Sumneytown Pike, Kulpsville, PA  19443, on Saturday, August 29 at 3:00pm.  Friends may meet with the family from 2:00 - 3:00pm.

A future inurnment will take place at Towamencin Mennonite Cemetery.
