Susan M.
Hause
Apr 9, 1927 — Jan 2, 2021
Susan Martha Hause (nee Darde) died peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Peter Becker Community in Harleysville, PA at the age of 93.
Susan was born in Telford, PA on April 9, 1927, the daughter of Peter Darde, Sr. and Susan (Stock) Darde. A child of the Great Depression, her family struggled through hard financial times, moving first to Chalfont, PA and then to Line Lexington, PA to live with extended family. There she went to school in the small schoolhouse that had many grades grouped into one room. At home, she slept in an unheated third floor attic with her siblings and helped out with chores like gardening, canning, refilling milk bottles at the local dairy farm, sewing, and prepping live chickens for dinner. She attended Lansdale High School (class of 1945) during the war years and loved playing softball, swimming, and taking trips to the beach on her Indian Scout motorcycle. After graduation, she went to Lansdale Business School and used her organizational, people, and typing skills to get a job at Hunter Spring Company and met the love of her life, Leonard Hause. They married in 1948 and had two children, Leonard, Jr. (1952) and Carol (1954). At that time, Sue and Len were able to afford to build a new house in Line Lexington that she would call home for over 60 years.
In 1959 after a new elementary school was built in New Britain Township where her children would go, Susan took a job as the school secretary and became the "mom" to a couple of generations of elementary school kids. She remembered all their names and their parent's names, helped them out with lunch money when they forgot, and patched them up when they were injured or sick. She transferred to Butler Elementary School when it opened in 1965 and later retired from the Central Bucks School District after over three decades of service. In retirement, she and Len continued to enjoy traveling around the country, taking trips to Carol's cabin in the mountains of Pennsylvania, visiting Len Jr. in Texas, and making an annual camping trek to the beach in Chincoteague, VA. She was an avid bowler, Pinochle player, jigsaw puzzle fanatic, and was especially fond of time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never tired of watching and photographing sunsets. Susan was a good, kind, humble, hard working, and loving person, and she will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard Hause, Sr., brother Peter Darde Jr, and sister Pauline Smith. She is survived by her sister Betty Sellers (Larry), brother Donald Darde (RoseMarie), sister-in-law Nathalee Darde, son Leonard Hause Jr. (Cynthia), daughter Carol Reber (James), as well as her five grandchildren Andrew Reber (Tiffany), Christopher Hause (Courtney Cherry), Rebecca Stout (Bradley), Keith Hause, and Sarah Hause and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home of Souderton, PA. A safe protocol outdoor burial service for family will be at Hilltown Union Cemetery, Hilltown, PA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a good cause in these difficult times. A celebration of life will be held at a future date when conditions are safe for travel and congregating.
