Thelma Mae (Barth) Hartwick , 95, of Harleysville, formerly of Phoenixville, PA went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at Grand View Hospital, Sellersville,PA.

She was the loving wife of the late A. Reuben Hartwick for 66 years. Thelma was born in New Castle, PA to the late Harold C. Barth and the late Mae C. (Wendt) Barth.

Thelma graduated from New Castle High School, New Castle, PA, class of (January) 1945, where she enjoyed Latin and algebra; she learned the latter well enough to help her sons with their homework over twenty years later. She graduated from North Central Bible Institute, Minneapolis, MN with a Certificate in Christian Education. At NCBI, she lived in the "Dog House" (named for her collection of ceramic pooches), with her best friend, Rachel Hartwick.  Rachel's brother Reuben, also a student, paid attention to all the other girls at school, but finally came home to marry Thelma.  She attended Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, for a semester (Fall 1950), but didn't like the white glove inspections; nonetheless, she corresponded with her roommates for the next fifty years!

After NCBI and BJU, Thelma worked as a Bank Teller Assistant at Citizens National Bank in New Castle, PA and then as a Sales Clerk at Shenango Pottery, also in New Castle.  Her co-workers at the Pottery helped her complete her set of good china dishes as a wedding present.  Thelma was employed as a confidential secretary to the Dean of Students, then as a Library Assistant, at the University of Valley Forge, Phoenixville, PA for 26 years.  In the library, she supervised the first computer lab on campus and helped students format their papers and deal with the complexities of footnotes.

In between her time in business and education, Thelma made a warm home for two boys, sharing her love for Jesus with them. She had a pleasant soprano voice and in addition to singing in the choir, taught the boys to sing parts as the congregation sang the great hymns of the faith.  She remembered these to the end of her days and would sing without the words at Sunday afternoon hymns sings at the Peter Becker Retirement Community where she lived.  She also helped her husband Reuben in church work at the churches he pastored: Wellsboro, Ellwood City and Coraopolis, PA.  She taught Sunday School, worked in the Women's Missionary Council, and wherever she was, made life-long friends among the church members. (A fall leaf trip to Wellsboro was a favorite vacation weekend for many year.)  She was a life long member of the Assemblies of God, lastly at Family Worship Center, Lansdale, PA.

She is survived by her two sons, Melvin Hartwick & wife Tina of Fairless Hills, PA, Darrell Hartwick & wife Carmen Aldinger of West Newton, MA; grandson, Colin Hartwick of Philadelphia, PA; three granddaughters, Carolyn Hartwick of Philadelphia, PA, Kirsten Hartwick-Das of Washington, DC, Linnea Hartwick of Alameda, CA; a great-grandson, Ajani Marcel Das, of Washington, DC.

In addition to her husband A. Reuben, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carol J. Barth

Details on a memorial service are pending. A private burial will take place at Castle View Memorial Gardens, New Castle, PA.
