Obituary

Walter "Walt" L. Hockman , 90, of Perkasie, PA went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at his residence.

He was the loving husband of Alma May (Rice) Hockman for 69 years. Walt was born in New Britain Twp., PA to the late Elmer S. Hockman and the late Sara M. (Landis) Hockman.

He attended Gehman's Schoolhouse and later earned his Graduate Equivalence Degree.

Walt owned and operated the family dairy, hog, beef, and crop farm in Hilltown Twp. He then worked as a plumber for the former Norman Good Plumbing & Heating (now known as Good's Plumbing) in Souderton, PA. He later worked as the director of buildings and grounds for the Pennridge School District in Perkasie, PA. After retiring, Walt returned to his love of farming.

He was a member and treasurer of the Grundsow Lodge Nummer Neine an der Dief Runn in Dublin, PA. Walt was a longtime member of Deep Run Mennonite Church East where he served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, Youth group leader, and in various other capacities. He was involved with the Mennonite Voluntary Service program that helped low income people in Philadelphia. His farm served as a week end retreat for the young people serving in the voluntary service who had often come from rural upbringings. His involvement in the organization resulted in lifelong friendships with people across the country and Canada.

Walt enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, and old tractors. He loved to spread the gospel at the Helping Hand Mission on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia. Walt loved visiting the Lancaster area and enjoyed speaking to the Amish and Mennonites in Pennsylvania Dutch.

Farmer Walt was well known in the neighborhood for his outgoing and inviting nature. He was a devoted family man who was hardworking, caring, honest, and always willing to help others.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Marjorie R. Wyse & husband, Edward of Perkasie, PA, Joyce M. Stellabott & husband, Michael of Perkasie, PA; his son, Dale W.
