Obituary

William "Bill" Hansell Childs , age 98, formerly of Souderton, PA and Dock Woods Community in Lansdale, PA went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

He was the loving husband of the late Caroline Ruth (Huff) Childs for 73 years. William was born at Abington Hospital, the fifth of seven children, born to the late Wilford J. Childs and the late Helen M. (Stempel) Childs of Doylestown.

He grew up on the farm near Delaware Valley College and attended Doylestown High School. He entered the United States Army in October of 1944 and served as a technician fifth grade Company G, 169th Infantry as a mortar gunner during WWII and received his Honorable Discharge in September of 1946.

William was employed as a tool and die maker for 47 years at Fisher and Porter in Warminster, PA.

He loved sports and played baseball for the Sell-Perk Redbirds in the 1950's and also played basketball and excelled in softball with Fisher and Porter as a center fielder. In the early 1960's, he coached several different teams in the Souderton Little League for 12 years. He also umpired for several years. In the 1970's and early 1980's, he continued to play church softball for 13 more years until he was 57. He also volunteered his time with Boy Scout Troop 461 in Souderton for several years during the 1960's. He also enjoyed watching the Phillies and Eagles.

He came to know the Lord in his 50's and was a former member of Grace Bible Church in Souderton, then later at Calvary Chapel in Philadelphia and then later at Heritage Bible Church in Pottstown.

William loved spending time with his family, working in his metal shop, growing tomatoes and other vegetables in his garden until he was in his 90's.

He was a loving, faithful, humble, caring man who was very physically fit and had a strong work ethic.

William is survived by his four sons, William James Childs & wife, Susan of Honey Brook, PA, James Edwin Childs & wife, Beverly of Telford, PA, Edwin Allen Childs & wife, Suzanne of Telford, PA, Allen Lee Childs & wife, Elisabeth of Quakertown, PA; his 18 grandchildren – Michael, Lynn, Lauren, David, Kevin, Mary, Steven, Katie, Andrew, Joanna, Grant, Luca, Sarah, Dawn, Daniel, Nicole, Mark, & Ryan; and his 27 great-grandchildren – JJ, Jayvien, Jade, Peyton, Haley, Asher, Luke, Logan, Kieva, Austin, Legacie, Raiden, Emily, Eli, Sophia, Anna Maria, Anthony, Rosalinda, Raphael, Casey, Logan, Ethan, Arwin, Vivian, Remington, Leilana, & Mark.

In addition to his parents and wife, Caroline, he was preceded in death by his infant grandson, Brian Philip Childs; his two brothers, George & Robert Childs; his four sisters, Leona Jacobus, Eleanor Carney, Edith Keyser, & Joanne Diduck; his two sisters-in-law, Vera & Mary Childs; and his four brothers-in-law, Carl Jacobus, Melvin Carney, Robert Keyser, & Philip Diduck.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Dock Woods Community Chapel, 275 Dock Drive, Lansdale, PA 19446, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am.

A private burial will take place at Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
