Claude E.
Good
Jan 10, 1929 — Sep 3, 2019
Claude E. Good , 90, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Lansdale, PA, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Souderton Mennonite Homes. He was the loving husband of the late Alice (Longenecker) Good. Claude was born in Spring City, PA to Allen and Hannah (Gross) Good. He was a member of Souderton Mennonite Church.
He graduated from Eastern Mennonite College in 1954 and married Alice the following year. After spending two years of alternate 1-W service at Philadelphia State Hospital (a psychiatric facility) and completing his master's degree in rural sociology at Cornell University, he and Alice served as missionaries in Mexico for 25 years. Sponsored by Franconia Mennonite Missions, they worked in a small indigenous village in the mountains of the southern state of Oaxaca, performing medical work, fomenting literacy, and encouraging the formation of a Christian community among the local Triqui population. Claude studied the Triqui language spoken in Chicahuaxtla, and created a Triqui-Spanish dictionary. He aso translated an Old Testament Summary into the Triqui language and then went on to translate the New Testament into a second dialect of Triqui. After returning to Pennsylvania, Claude continued his translation work and also began teaching conversational English to students at International House Philadelphia. He also coordinated an outreach program for international students in the Franconia conference area.
Perhaps the most impactful work carried out by Claude began in the early 1990s, when he became involved in the eradication of intestinal worms among children in low-income countries. His interest in this problem grew out of his and Alice's years of providing medical care to the Triqui people. In 1998 he officially launched the Worm Project, an organization that has provided over 100 million tablets to children in over 70 countries thanks to Claude's untiring efforts and the help of many other dedicated people.
Claude enjoyed traveling, following current events, meeting new people, sharing his faith, encouraging others to live simply, and studying the Bible. Up to the final days of his life he also enjoyed publishing a regular "blog" of his reflections on life and faith, which he shared with dozens of friends, associates, and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alice (Longenecker) Good and survived by three daughters, Marcia Good, of Goshen, IN, Cecilia Good of Lancaster, PA, Tricia Russell and husband Mark of Apex, NC; two sons, Carl Good of Chicago, IL and Robert Good and wife Tami, of Sellersville, PA; nine grandchildren, Katrina, Karla and husband Rusty, Joel, Megan, Kristen, Jared, Camron, Ryan, and Kaitlyn, and one great-grandchild, Jude. He is survived by one brother, Ernest Good of Carlsbad, NM and two brothers-in-law, Sam Horst and John Kurtz. He was preceded in death by brothers Webster, James, and Lawrence Good and sisters Elizabeth Horst, Barbara Kurtz, Pauline Good, and Catherine Kurtz.
